Commissioners Ask for Critical Conservation Area Designation for Colorado River Basin

On May 5, 2014, Mesa County Commissioners sent a letter requesting Senator Bennet support designation of the Colorado River Basin as one of the eight Critical Conservation Areas pursuant to the 2014 Farm Bill.

The Commissioners encourage establishment of a Colorado River Basin Critical Conservation Area (CCA), as it would:
1. Underscore the national significance of the Colorado River Basin and bring in additional investment from other sources;
2. Allow the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to focus resources on priority areas for addressing drought, soil erosion and other issues;
3. Increase the efficiency and effectiveness of NRCS programs by making system-wide investments and tailoring programs to meet regional needs;
4. Expand opportunities to improve irrigation on lands that do not rank high for salinity control.
