Media Advisory from our Mesa County Solid Waste Management Department:

MESA COUNTY, COLO - October 6, 2014 – Starting October 1, 2014 Clifton Ace Hardware, located at 569 32 Road in Grand Junction, will be giving consumers one FREE 5-pack of 30 gallon compostable paper yard waste bags, while supplies last. The giveaway is in support of Mesa County’s efforts to keep yard waste out of its landfill.

“Keeping yard waste out of the landfill greatly reduces the amount of methane being produced which has to be controlled to minimize greenhouse gases” says Mesa County Solid Waste Director, Cameron Garcia. “The Organic Materials Composting Facility was started in 2001 to reduce the amount of yard waste entering the landfill and produce a product that is beneficial to our local soils”.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, up to 18 percent of the average landfill space is made up of yard waste. When yard waste is buried in a landfill, it doesn’t disintegrate and will never turn into soil. In fact, yard waste in a landfill can do real damage to the environment, producing nasty byproducts like liquid leachate and methane, which contributes to climate change. By composting, yard waste is given a second life as nutrient-rich compost that can be used in gardens, parks, athletic parks and farms.

Consumers wanting to help the environment are also asked to stay away from conventional plastic bags. Unlike the paper alternative, plastic does not compost. Plastic bags increase the processing costs and result in lower quality compost. Alternately, yard waste put into paper bags can be added directly to the compost pile with no additional effort. Residents can drop off their fall compostables for free at the Mesa County Organic Materials Composting Facility at 3071 Highway 50 in Grand Junction. The facility is open Tuesday through Saturday from 8:00am to 4:30pm.
