Commissioners proclaim November Prematurity Awareness Month

The Mesa County Commissioners on Monday proclaimed November 2015 Prematurity Awareness Month.

Terri Jones of the March of Dimes Western Colorado Chapter was there to receive the proclamation.

The proclamation read, in part:

"Whereas, the March of Dimes Foundation is a pioneer in improving the health of infants and women of childbearing age by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality; and...

"Whereas, 5,516 babies were born preterm in the state of Colorado, representing 8.4 percent of all 2014 state births; and

"Whereas, the March of Dimes has set a national goal of reducing preterm birth to 5.5 percent in every state by 2030."

Terri Jones spoke briefly to the Commissioners after the proclamation was read.
