Orchard Avenue from Normandy Drive to 29 Road is closed for Reconstruction

Orchard Avenue from Normandy Drive to 29 Road is closed.

Mesa County and the City of Grand Junction are jointly working to reconstruct Orchard Avenue from Normandy Drive to 29 Road. This project is the second phase of improvements to pedestrian routes near Nisley Elementary as well as a reconstruction of the roadway.

Construction began this week and will be completed in the fall. Improvements will include widening the road to three lanes, adding bike lanes, adding gutters, sidewalks, storm sewer, and streetlights through the entire stretch, on both the north and south sides of Orchard Avenue.

The $2.1 million total cost of the project is split between the City and County.

Arrow boards and signs are in place to alert motorists of the upcoming work zone and restrictions. For the safety of the construction crew, drivers should remain alert, reduce their speed, and watch for stopped traffic while passing near the work zone.

Orchard Avenue is closed to through traffic but will have one lane open eastbound for local access. Residents will enter the area off of 28 1/2 Road on the west end and exit onto 29 Road. They will not be able to enter Orchard Avenue off of 28 ¾ Road or 29 Road.

The below pictures illustrate the importance of this much-needed project that will allow pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists to safely travel. Orchard Avenue is a vital link to Nisley Elementary, and it needs to accommodate a wide range of vehicles and non-motorized users.
