The adult beetle feeds on grapes, peaches, nectarines, plums, vegetables, sweet corn, ornamentals, deciduous trees, and turf grass. <br /><br />"It's all hands on deck to ensure Grand Junction is the hard stop for this invasive species so that it does not spread into Clifton, Palisade, Fruita, Loma, and beyond," said Commissioner Bobbie Daniel. "Time is of the essence, and we are responding to the needs of our agriculture community, listening to our farmers and the invasive species experts to jump on this as quickly as possible. If we act now, we save ourselves a lot of time, money and heartache." <br /><br />Peaches grown in Mesa County bring in approximately $14 million annually to the local economy, wineries and vineyards bring in roughly $40 million annually, and Palisade Fruit and wine-associated tourism bring in $22 million per year. Given the importance of agriculture and tourism to Mesa County, the Japanese Beetle poses a significant threat of harm to the local economy.<br /><br />In 2022, 240 Japanese Beetles were captured in Mesa County, Colorado.<br /><br />"Mesa County is committed to protecting the local economy, ensuring the well-being of our citizens, and bringing our partners together to solve this urgent beetle outbreak," said Commissioner Janet Rowland.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div></div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>Japanese beetle on plum. The Japanese Beetle, one of the most damaging insect pests in the United States, has been discovered breeding in the Appleton area of Mesa County. We need your help to eradicate this population before it grows and spreads, causing severe damage to our agricultural economy.<br /><br />This beetle feeds on over 300 species of plants, including grapes, peaches, sweet corn, trees, turf grass, and ornamental plants, all of which affect our economy. If it establishes, it will cause severe damage to local farms and landscaped properties. The spread of this beetle will affect everybody, whether you're growing 100 acres of peaches or have a small lawn and a rosebush.<br /><br />Residents in the currently infested area can expect to be contacted in March by Mesa County representatives requesting consent to complete lawn treatments for Japanese Beetle grubs. We will offer advice and assistance on our ongoing eradication plan. If you're in or near the infested area and want to be proactive, one of the best ways is to tell your lawn care company to maintain your lawn with grub control treatment or apply grub control products yourself.<div><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9sf7p16HmQIwWmFCOBRDrCqTINksS68U-jokbBMJiUhn6_Q4sKn09H6GFiiMcHQOp5DoPUQX0s7MUs0bmLIE5ZWPD85mnsYRNBgb39o1EBnmX-0MgpVQG5hYv-d-E7wjFFrYh1r34AsHYBsyN81EZP6Q5w9cXcT7jGrdmM9gDQM8CqI0F7LqRsmo4/s11000/Heat%20Map%20Imagery.png" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="8500" data-original-width="11000" height="494" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9sf7p16HmQIwWmFCOBRDrCqTINksS68U-jokbBMJiUhn6_Q4sKn09H6GFiiMcHQOp5DoPUQX0s7MUs0bmLIE5ZWPD85mnsYRNBgb39o1EBnmX-0MgpVQG5hYv-d-E7wjFFrYh1r34AsHYBsyN81EZP6Q5w9cXcT7jGrdmM9gDQM8CqI0F7LqRsmo4/w640-h494/Heat%20Map%20Imagery.png" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Japanese Beetle infested area (hotspot) map.</td></tr></tbody></table><div><br />Protecting your yard, ornamental plants, and the whole county's agriculture is critical. If just a few people allow this beetle to multiply in their lawns, it will keep spreading. We must each do our part to eradicate it as soon as possible, or it will continue to spread and become unmanageable.<br /><br />Effective treatment options are pesticides for grub control or complete lawn dry-down from May-August. Our recommended pesticide is Acelepryn, a reduced-risk pesticide, which the EPA classifies as less toxic than dish soap. Homeowner formulations of grub control pesticides are available at garden centers and are relatively easy to apply.<br /><br />If you're outside the hotspot but want to be protected from Japanese Beetle, you can be proactive and treat your lawn for grubs in April. <br /><br />If you find what you think is a Japanese Beetle, you can get ahold of <a href="https://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/insects/japanese-beetle-5-601/">CSU Extension Services</a>, 2775 Highway 50, and send them a picture or take it in for identification.<br /><br />We strongly encourage residents in the infested area to <a href="https://www.mesacounty.us/sites/default/files/2023-03/Consent%20and%20Release%20to%20Spray%20Japanese%20Beetle.pdf">consent to the treatment</a> option offered by Mesa County. Alternatively, you can do the grub control application yourself in April or dry down your lawn from May-August so that we can protect all of our ornamental and turf plants, as well as all of Palisades fruit and wine agriculture.<br /><br />Please visit the CSU Extension Services <a href="https://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/insects/japanese-beetle-5-601/">website</a> or contact them directly to learn more about the <a href="http://wci.colostate.edu/Assets/pdf/CSUFactSheets/JapaneseBeetleFS.05601.pdf">Japanese beetle and treatment options</a>. <br /><br />We need everyone's help to eradicate this invasive pest before it's too late. Let's work together to protect our community's agriculture.<p></p></div>Mesa County, Coloradohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06450782277019498087noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951325180968090278.post-58865016621898320862023-03-02T15:28:00.001-07:002023-03-02T15:28:53.627-07:00Look back into Mesa County over 100 years ago<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSqxIk5Q0FcICxbHaJF8XqlCjHqKsLM_pjUtu5a-hdc6gutAz1bh7tdGQaf_VbPhGBE8vvpcdyP3rFHdKGGBWbj8IpqiDMitO5IaYHvwKPt8wtztnI8h0aSATWFcNed6EzwHT0aRnE6ucUdd1cZePy2ftaEx3mGogSZ6dAJeAL2WJ_zpjnZDgAyoT4ig/s512/Throwback%20photo%20of%20Mesa%20County%201907%20-%201909.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="247" data-original-width="512" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSqxIk5Q0FcICxbHaJF8XqlCjHqKsLM_pjUtu5a-hdc6gutAz1bh7tdGQaf_VbPhGBE8vvpcdyP3rFHdKGGBWbj8IpqiDMitO5IaYHvwKPt8wtztnI8h0aSATWFcNed6EzwHT0aRnE6ucUdd1cZePy2ftaEx3mGogSZ6dAJeAL2WJ_zpjnZDgAyoT4ig/w640-h308/Throwback%20photo%20of%20Mesa%20County%201907%20-%201909.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Photographer unknown. This week, the Board of County Commissioners submitted a letter to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, offering comments on the Colorado Wolf Restoration and Management Plan draft.</div><br />The Commissioners suggested several measures to address concerns about the coexistence of gray wolves and human activities in Colorado. They emphasized the need for effective outreach and education programs to raise awareness about the gray wolf and to encourage the public to report any wolf sightings or conflicts.<br /><br />They also highlighted the importance of monitoring the impacts of the reintroduction on the local ecosystem and the need for adaptive management practices to adjust the restoration plan if necessary. This theory has been proven effective in improving a community's overall well-being.<br /><br />Today, Mesa County Commissioners have taken a step towards implementing this theory by approving an agreement to provide a spring clean-up for the Clifton/Fruitvale area. The County has allocated $62,500 to the City of Grand Junction to service the area bounded by 29 Road on the West, 30 Road on the East, F ½ Road on the North, and I-70B on the South.<br /><br />This clean-up project is about more than just improving the area's appearance. It also aims to reduce crime and have a positive ripple effect throughout Mesa County. By removing litter and debris from the streets, the community will appear more welcoming and cleaner, increasing pride in the neighborhood and reducing criminal activity.<br /><br />Studies have shown that a clean environment directly impacts the mental and physical health of the community.Mesa County, Coloradohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06450782277019498087noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951325180968090278.post-60847549130564984982023-02-21T13:46:00.004-07:002023-02-21T13:50:36.576-07:00Mesa County Motor Vehicle Offices to Expand Hours of Operation<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0dICIyEM8IWeGZKzC2mw28qRo_nrILZwy982bhKok1QeigOg59X4Ms5CHpma58mr2iz7w7TOyDd4nIPak-0XtW5o-2nbid0E9y5gRMBt0zoZipY_IfEAjSULNWaF8OV_boYo6UZowg7_S3Irn3BVch3oHxgKpwHiWPFwOIlLAb10UkyM16ec87k1i/s1080/HMV%20expands%20hours%20of%20operation%20(1).png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0dICIyEM8IWeGZKzC2mw28qRo_nrILZwy982bhKok1QeigOg59X4Ms5CHpma58mr2iz7w7TOyDd4nIPak-0XtW5o-2nbid0E9y5gRMBt0zoZipY_IfEAjSULNWaF8OV_boYo6UZowg7_S3Irn3BVch3oHxgKpwHiWPFwOIlLAb10UkyM16ec87k1i/w640-h640/HMV%20expands%20hours%20of%20operation%20(1).png" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div> The Mesa County Clerk and Recorder's office is proud to announce the expansion of its hours of operation for its Motor Vehicle offices.
